From 5-10 October 2019, transport and logistics team VIA LATVIA travelled to Shanghai - the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, the financial centre of China, to participate - for the first time - in the 2nd China International Import Exhibition.

Latvia was represented for the first time in the second China International Import Exhibition (CIIE) with the National Pavilion showcasing trade, tourism and transport cooperation opportunities.

The Latvian National Pavilion was opened by Mr Ralfs Nemiro the Minister of the Ministry of Economic of the Republic of Latvia, Her Excellency Ms Maija Manika, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the People’s Republic of China. After the opening, the honourable guests and CIIE visitors had the opportunity to inspect the VIA Latvia and to meet with the transport and logistics representatives.  

At the VIA Latvia section of the Latvian National pavilion, the representatives from Latvian Railways, Riga, Ventspils ports and Liepaja Special Economic Zone introduced transport services and solutions, as well as highlighted multimodal transporta advantages in delivering goods to and from third countries via Latvia.

Transportation of goods via Latvia is known to be effective, efficient and economical. Therefore, Latvian transport enterprises at CIIE offered buyers, sellers and traders of commodities and general goods, to consider the transportation of the dry-bulk, liquid, chemicals, agricultural, food and frozen goods via Latvia.

Latvia is actively participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and China-Central and Eastern European Countries 17+1 cooperation format. This cooperation has produced tangible outcomes in the transport and logistics sector that has brought China and Latvia closer with container trains, air cargo flights and shipping container line services.

The VIA Latvia team included the Counsellor of the Ministry of Transport of Latvia at the Embassy of Latvia to China, Latvian Railways, LDZ Logistics, Riga Freeport, Ventspils Freeport and Liepaja Special Economic Zone representatives.

VIA Latvia represents Latvian transport and logistics industry by combining the interests of all the stakeholders to provide comprehensive, safe, fast and effective solutions for cargo transportation, distribution and e-commerce services via Latvia to and from third markets.

The China International Import Exhibition is the world’s first and largest national-level import exhibition, which is held annually in Shanghai, China. The 2nd CIIE received delegates from more than 155 participating countries and 26 international organizations, presented more than 64 country exhibitions and attracted over 3 800 enterprises. It is estimated that over 500,000 domestic and overseas buyers visited the six-day event. The CIIE is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
